How I got started in Blender

I've recently began learning blender and this is a documentation of my process making my version of the classic donut. It may lead to other things, who knows? For now, it's a great way for me to keep busy and challenge myself creatively!

The classic donut

I began a tutorial by Blender Guru on youtube and dived right into learning how to create this delicious shape. Overall, it taught me some really great tools that I could see myself using in the projects to come. More specifically, I could use these tools to create digital models of props and set design for film!

Getting there is half the fun

Pretty soon I realized that learning Blender was a bit like learning how to use Premiere Pro, I just needed to know which buttons to click to get the right outcome for the visual I want to achieve. Premiere pro was like training wheels for using the tools on blender. If I hadn't used any video editing software before this, I would probably have been completely overwhelmed.

"I'd stop the world and [mesh] with you"

Meshes are kind of like the layout of the object that you're trying to create. Think of putting a fishing net over your object, it lays on top of it and follows the curves and edges. That's the outline of your object that you initially work with and you can go back to see it any time you like by switching into different modes.

Onions aren't the only things with layers

In the same way that you can't see the inside of an onion without peeling back the layers or cutting into it (or of course using your x-ray vision), you can't create a donut in blender without creating separate layers that fit into each other, like puzzle pieces. The icing and donut parts need to be separate so you can work with them individually and so that the icing can have enough "information" (that's a coding word for ya) to stretch over the donut without going through the donut itself.
